Rustex is an easy to apply single pack water based rust converter developed over 40 years. The Rustex formula can be used for almost any rusted metal project.
- Converts rust to a hard, water insoluble primer finish
- Neutralises the corrosion process
- Superior coating consistency
- Mineral acid free – classified as non-hazardous
- Minimum surface preparation required
- Cost effective
- Provides ready for painting surface
Typical Uses
Rustex has multiple uses. It is normally used for treatment of rusted steel prior to application of paint or other coating systems. It is ideal for cars & trucks, boats, gates, ballast tanks and bridges.
Suitable substrates
Rustex may be applied to dry or damp rusted ferrous metal surfaces, following the recommended preparations.
Colour
Rustex is black once dry.
Packaging & Coverage
Rustex is supplied in 1L and 5L units.
The coverage of Rustex is approximately 8m2 per 1L unit or 40m2 per 5L unit, depending on the texture and porosity of the surface.

5°C - 40°C
Curing time
Touch dry in 15 to 45 minutes. touch dry in 15 to 45 minutes.

Shelf Life
Please speak to Polycote for more information on shelf life.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry frost-free environment away from sources of ignition, between 5°C and 30°C.
Please consult the technical data sheet for full product technical data.
Preparation
Remove all dirt, old paint and loose rust by a wire brush. Remove acid, alkali, grease oil and chemicals with detergent water then rinse thoroughly with clean water. Paintwork blistered by rust should be scraped down to hard surface. Do not remove all traces of rust.
The surface may be damp BUT NOT WET when Rustex is applied.
Mixing
Stir well before use. Contents will separate during storage. Do not dilute. Any rust particles picked up on the paintbrush will be liable to contaminate the paint in the container, reducing the shelf life. This can be avoided by pouring a sufficient amount into a separate plastic container for each operation.
DO NOT return unused material to the original container.
Application
Brush application is recommended for the first coat to ensure thorough penetration into the rust. Apply 2-3 thin coats directly onto rust.
Other application methods are:
| Roller |
A short nap roller may be used. Foam rollers are not recommended. |
| Air assisted spray |
Thin with up to 10% water. Use a 0.40mm, 40–60° tip and 40–80 psi air pressure. |
| Airless spray |
Typically, a 28:1 airless spray unit at 70 psi would be used, with a 0.25–0.40mm, 40–60° tip and 1400–2100 psi fluid pressure at the tip. |
During application, Rustex starts off white. At the blue stage continue gently cross bushing for a further 2 minutes and allow to dry for the chemical reaction and conversion of the rust surface to take place. Surplus Rustex may cause staining of surrounding paintwork if allowed to dry. Remove surplus immediately.
